Why use ear plugs?
If you are a watersports enthusiast you may wish to consider wearing ear plugs to prevent "surfers ear" which can lead to deafness and balance problems. Constant ingress of water irritates the inner ear and as a defensive response it gradually builds up more bone and will eventually block the ear canal completely. This can occur in river water and sea water. This can also be caused by consistent exposure to wind! Apparently experts can identify the surfers from North Cornwall from the surfers from South Cornwall by looking at the "surfers ear damage" in each ear; given the prevailing winds from the Southwest one ear is always worse than the other!
For kayakers water ingress can affect your balance during the activity. After an Eskimo roll water can become trapped in the ear and can instantly affect your ability to balance and therefore your ability to maintain confident control of your kayak.
